iOS 6 features a new Do Not Disturb option, found in Settings, which lets you disable alerts (you can customize it, pick and even set a schedule in Settings > Notifications).
When you enable Do Not Disturb, a moon icon does not simply appear to the left of the time in the status bar, it animates in and out.
