With the introduction of OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple now allows you to hide System Preferences panes that you don’t want to bother with. Just go to View > Customize to enable checkboxes next to each pane that you can toggle.

The View menu also offers the option to organize panes alphabetically instead of by Category, which is the default.
